Announcing NCARB’s Newest Monograph, Healthcare Facilities

Washington, DC—The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ (NCARB) newest monograph, Healthcare Facilities, offers the type of information resource that architects need when designing projects for healthcare facilities. The monograph focuses on key trends in healthcare architecture that provide patients and staff with a fully supportive environment.

Originally part of Wiley’s “Building Type Basics” series founded by Stephen A. Kliment, the monograph covers many of the unique features of healthcare facilities including: design trends, site planning, codes, energy and environmental challenges, renovation, and maintenance issues. Divided into four informative chapters, the monograph includes hundreds of photos, floor plans, and diagrams to help illustrate industry experts’ answers to key questions about healthcare facility design.

According to the author of chapter one, Richard L. Kobus, FAIA, FACHA, “Now, more than ever, the U.S. healthcare system is under tremendous pressure to reduce costs, to provide greater convenience in a manner more responsive to consumers, and to hold itself more accountable for improving safety, quality, and outcomes.”

“By designing facilities that promote healing, advance discovery, and support strategic and operational goals, architects can play a vital role in helping healthcare institutions not only meet the challenges they face today, but also position themselves for tomorrow.”

Healthcare Facilities has two quizzes to allow readers to earn smaller quantities of professional development units (PDUs)/continuing education units (CEUs) at a time. Successful completion of each quiz earns seven PDUs in health, safety, and welfare (HSW) for a combined total of 14 PDUs for the entire monograph. The monograph’s price includes the monograph, the web-based quiz, the score reporting process, and one free retest if needed.

NCARB’s monograph series provides a convenient, low-cost way for architects and other design professionals to learn about new developments in the industry and meet HSW continuing education requirements. Current NCARB Record holders can earn PDUs for less than $16 per unit—one of the lowest continuing education unit costs available today. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and all U.S. jurisdictions accept NCARB monographs for compliance with HSW continuing education requirements.
