  • The ARE concentrates on the professional services that affect the public health, safety, and welfare.
  • The objective of the ARE is to reflect the practice of architecture as an integrated whole.
  • Nine divisions comprise the examination. The six multiple-choice divisions are: Pre-Design, General Structures, Lateral Forces, Mechanical & Electrical Systems, Building Design / Materials & Methods, and Construction Documents & Services. The three graphic divisions are: Site Planning, Building Planning, and Building Technology.

ARE Guidelines Version 3.1
The ARE Guidelines Version 3.1 is a free publication sent to all candidates who have been approved by their respective member board or provincial association to take the ARE. NCARB's testing consultant, Prometric, mails the ARE Guidelines Version 3.1 to all eligible exam candidates.
