Inside NCARB
Get to know our organization with our FY18 Bylaws, financial results, and organizational chart.
In partnership with our Member Boards, we have been hard at work advancing our services to the public and the architecture community. As we approach our Centennial year, we’ve also been using this opportunity to take stock of NCARB’s current and future role in the regulation of architecture. The results of this work can be seen in the documents below, which demonstrate the important decisions made by our Member Boards and their effect on our Bylaws, our solid financial position, and the continued growth of our organization.
In May 1919, during an American Institute of Architects (AIA) convention in Nashville, 15 architects from 13 states came together to form what would eventually become NCARB. Since our inception, our members, volunteers, and staff have worked hard to build pathways to licensure and reciprocity that uphold the concept of “rigor for a reason.”
Over the next year, NCARB will explore where our organization has been and where we're going—including how technology might influence the future of architectural regulation, and how we can continue going further for our members and customers.
As a nonprofit, social responsibility is important at NCARB. Our organization wouldn’t exist without the dedicated efforts of our volunteer community—in FY18, over 300 volunteers dedicated over 38,000 hours to our programs and initiatives. With their help and inspiration, we’ve worked to give back in a number of ways throughout FY18:
NCARB continues to grow as we work to implement the changes developed by our members and volunteers. Throughout FY18, we rolled out several key updates for licensure candidates, architects, and licensing board members, including advances to ARE 5.0, national ethical standards, and regular updates on key legislative items.
NCARB’s organization structure, functions, and processes are governed by our Bylaws. Changes to NCARB Bylaws must be approved by the Member Boards. In FY18, NCARB conducted a major overhaul of the Bylaws, which went into effect at the end of the 2018 Annual Business Meeting.
Headquartered in Washington, DC, NCARB has a staff of nearly 100 who work to provide the best possible service to our Member Boards and customers. The staff, consisting of experts in architecture as well as other fields, is divided into seven directorates that provide a wealth of diverse experiences and skill sets to the organization.
We provide our Member Boards with a yearly summary of the organization’s financial results at the Annual Business Meeting, including the year-end results, next fiscal year’s budget, and organizational fees.
The Administration team manages NCARB’s finances and human resources, and plans NCARB meetings, including the Annual Business Meeting.
The Council Relations team collaborates with and supports the Member Board Executive Committee, and works with NCARB’s Member Board Members to help implement national programs, advocate for reasonable regulation, and maintain our collateral relationships.
The Customer Relations team is the first line of contact for questions and concerns, giving outstanding service to students, licensure candidates, registered architects, and Member Boards for all our services.
The Education + Experience team develops and maintains the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), which guides licensure candidates through the process of gaining architecture experience. They also work with universities to ensure architectural degree programs meet the criteria needed to ensure students are equipped with the knowledge needed to move forward in becoming an architect.
The Examination team focuses on advancing and improving the Architect Registration Examination (ARE), and ensuring transparency in information relating to the examination.
The Information Systems team leads the modernization of our technology including My NCARB, line of business applications, infrastructure, and help desk.
The Marketing and Communications team gets the word out about NCARB’s initiatives, program updates, and news, and develops marketing materials, videos, website content, and social media campaigns.
