Can I use my laptop’s webcam to take the ARE online?
No, you cannot use your laptop’s integrated webcam to take the ARE. You must have an external webcam that you can move to provide a 360-degree view of your testing environment, and the webcam should have an autofocus capability.
Can I use multiple monitors to take the ARE online?
No, you cannot use multiple screens and/or monitors during the exam. While you may choose to connect a laptop to one external monitor, your laptop lid will need to be closed during your appointment.
Can I use a TV as a monitor when taking an online-proctored exam?
No, you should not use a TV as a monitor when taking an online-proctored exam. A single 19-inch or larger monitor displaying at 1920 x 1080 resolution is recommended.
Can I talk aloud to myself while testing online?
You should not talk aloud to yourself while taking the ARE online.
Can I take the ARE while completing the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®)?
Of the 55 jurisdictions, 50 licensing boards allow candidates to take the ARE while completing their experience—this is known as early eligibility. Find out if your board allows early eligibility through our licensing requirements tool.
Can I still view the resources for a case study after taking a break?
As long as you have at least one case study item remaining that is unseen before a break, you will still be able to access all the resources for that case study upon returning from your break.
Can I review, challenge, or verify my exam results?
If you would like to review a failed exam, contact your board of architecture immediately. The process and fees involved will vary based on your board. Please note: Some boards do not allow reviews. Can I reschedule an in-person exam appointment to be taken via online proctoring?
Yes! Candidates can reschedule an exam from an in-person to an online proctored delivery, and vice-versa, by selecting "Reschedule" under the division details in My NCARB. Learn more
Can I reschedule an exam appointment?
You can reschedule an ARE appointment up to 48 hours in advance of in-person appointments and 24 hours in advance of online proctored appointments. Additionally, you can cancel an appointment and retain your exam seat (seat credit) for a $100 fee. Learn more about exam appointments.
