NCARB is excited to announce the 2023 NCARB Scholars in Professional Practice Program, August 10-12, 2023. This year’s program will be held at Ball State University’s satellite CAP: INDY center in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.
Be sure to submit your application to this year’s program by April 14, 2023!
Each year, NCARB invites a selected group of professional practice educators to attend this multi-day professional development opportunity. The program focuses on both current and forward-looking trends in academia and practice. During this exclusive training event, up to 20 faculty members from architecture schools around the country will convene to share best practices, learn from experts, and enhance the delivery of their professional practice courses. See a recap of last year’s event!
Through a mix of presentations and interactive sessions, scholars will explore topics related to teaching professional practice. Expert coaches will help you to consider how to create an effective learning community with your students. Past session topics have included:
- Business development & marketing
- Dispute resolution
- Leadership strategies
- Professional ethics
- Financial basics of construction projects
- Negotiation
- Integration of practice topics throughout the curriculum
- Equity in the classroom and the workplace
- Future of academia and practice
Another major highlight of the event each year is the opportunity to share abbreviated versions of attendees’ own lessons for discussion and critique with a small group of peers.

Location
Ball State University will welcome the 2023 Scholars cohort to the downtown Indianapolis satellite of the Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning, CAP: INDY. Scholars will be housed at the Crowne Plaza, Indianapolis Union Station.
Indianapolis is a major destination for conventions and events, with plentiful daily flights. It has also been ranked the best airport in North America for 11 years in a row. Due to NASCAR events occurring the week of our event, attendees will be urged to make their flight arrangements early. First-time attendees who prefer to drive will be reimbursed up to 300 miles each way at the current mileage rate.
Downtown Indianapolis is rich in historic and modern architecture, with numerous works by Michael Graves and outstanding projects by local architects. Indiana also has a decades-long history of intentionally positioning itself as a sports and convention city and boasts the headquarters of the NCAA and many major sporting venues. An hour south, Columbus, Indiana, is legendary for its small-town projects by big-name architects, whose fees were funded by local philanthropist J. Irwin Miller. To the north, Carmel, Indiana, has become a textbook city for the extensive use of roundabouts and proactive placemaking by the city government.
COVID-19 Precautions
This is designed as an in-person event, and past attendees and our advisory boards have emphasized the value of in-person interactions. NCARB continues to monitor the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and will adapt as needed. We will continue to monitor and follow all Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations and local precautions in anticipation of this year’s Scholars gathering.
