Tampa, FL—Stephanie V. Hopkins, of Baltimore, Maryland, was elected as the public director of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) at its 2023 Annual Business Meeting. NCARB is a nonprofit organization made up of the architectural licensing boards of the 55 U.S. states and territories. The organization’s mission is to collaborate with those boards to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public by facilitating the licensure and credentialing of architects.

As a member of NCARB’s Board of Directors, Hopkins will provide the Board with a valuable outside perspective. In her role, she will ensure that public or consumer members of licensing boards are heard at the national level.

Hopkins was first appointed to the Maryland Board of Architects in 2014, reappointed in 2019, and has served on the board’s Continuing Professional Competency Committee. and has served on the board’s Continuing Education Committee. She has also been a valuable member of several NCARB committees, including the Ethics Case Study Work Group, which developed continuing education materials related to professional ethics for use by practicing architects. Hopkins has also been a valuable member of NCARB’s Futures Collaborative, which is exploring trends and technologies impacting the future of architecture practice and regulation.

During her time with the Maryland Board, Hopkins has actively engaged with NCARB’s community of public members, sharing best practices and ensuring that the voice of the consumer is well-represented.

Hopkins retired from the Office of the Baltimore City State’s Attorney in 2017. She received her certification in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ membership is made up of the architectural licensing boards of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NCARB, in collaboration with these boards, facilitates the licensure and credentialing of architects to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.  

To achieve these goals, NCARB works with its Member Boards and volunteers to develop and facilitate standards for licensure, including the national examination and experience program. NCARB also recommends regulatory guidelines for licensing boards and helps architects expand their professional reach through the NCARB Certificate.
