James Devine, NCARB, AIA, LEED AP, of Bismarck, North Dakota, has served on the North Dakota State Board of Architects and Landscape Architects since 2013 as a general member, secretary-treasurer, and president in that timeframe. Devine has served on the executive committee for NCARB's Region 5 since 2020 as Secretary-Treasurer in 2020 and 2021 and Chair in 2022. At NCARB’s 2024 Annual Business Meeting, Devine was elected to serve as director of Region 5, which represents the licensing boards of Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Devine has volunteered on several NCARB committees, including the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) 4.0 Forms Assembly Committee, the ARE 5.0 Item Development Subcommittee, the Policy Advisory Committee, and the Regional Leadership Committee.
Devine is the co-founder of J2 Studio Architecture + Design in Bismarck, North Dakota, a full-service architectural firm with a broad range of experience, including educational, industrial, municipal, commercial, and health care design. Devine and his wife, Janell, founded the firm in 2007 with a staff of four. Devine has also served as an advisor to several interns who have gone through the process of the former Intern Development Program (IDP) and current Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®). Devine has held an NCARB certificate since 1996 and is currently licensed in six states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Colorado, and Wyoming.
