Linda Alfson Schemmel, AIA, NCARB, is an experienced architect and planner with a deep commitment to the design profession and its ability to solve challenges in the built environment. As a Development Coordinator for the city of West Des Moines, she leverages her expertise as a design thinker to offer innovative solutions to her employer, community, and peers. An observer, collaborator, and leader, Linda is dedicated to advancing the profession and fostering a better community.
Linda's dedication to the field is highlighted by her appointment to the Iowa Architectural Examining Board by the Governor in 2012, where she served until 2021. During her tenure, she held the position of president for two years and led both the Rules Task Force and the Handbook Workgroup.
In 2024, Linda was elected Region 4 Director at NCARB’s Annual Business Meeting. Her history of involvement with NCARB at a regional level began in 2018 on the Region 4 (Mid-Central Conference) board, culminating in her role as chair from 2022 to 2024. Linda has also contributed to several NCARB committees, including the Policy Advisory Committee; Regional Leadership Committee; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee; and Education Committee. Notably, she chaired the Continuing Education Committee for two years.
Beyond her NCARB commitments, Linda is actively engaged in the architecture community. She served as the chair of Iowa Women in Architecture and is a current member of the AIA Strategic Council. Additionally, she is actively involved in the Iowa chapter of AIA, having led the component as President in 2013.
Linda’s extensive career and leadership roles exemplify her commitment to architecture, planning, and community development. Her contributions have made a significant impact on West Des Moines and the broader architectural community.
